Could it be your libc is a a very old/very new one?
Peter -- did you upgrade anything on your machine lately?

I know at least libc-5.4.x with x<20 are buggy; A binary compiled against
5.4.x should (but isn't always) compatible to an older libc.

Try recompiling yourself.
kernel version and hardware should be irrelevant.

I have RedHat 4.2 Linux, I always build my own compilers, and I have never
seen anything like this.

With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine. However, this is not
necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are going
to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly
overhead. -- RFC1925.
