According to Frank Heckenbach:

`Protected' is a "modifier" which can be used with or without `Var'
in formal parameters.  `Const' parameters are the same as `protected
Var' parameters, thus `protected Var' also yields a workaround for the
"`protected' in GPI files" bug.
